The Owego Strawberry Festival is filled with vendors of all types. More than dozen live bands will perform over the two-day festival. There's even a parade and the Miss Strawberry Festival pageant.
While lots of vendors, music, games and fun is key to any successful summer festival, what brings the crowds to this festival--to the tune of 25,000 to 40,000 per year--are the strawberries.
To do the Owego Strawberry Festival right, you have to start your day off with strawberry shortcake. Whether you choose to burn off those calories in the Strawberry Shake 5K race or hang around and buy more strawberries is up to you.
Afterward, stop by the wine and beer tent. Yes, there are wine slushies. I bet you can guess at least one of the flavors.
Strawberry picking reaches its prime in mid-June in Upstate New York and anyone who has eaten a pale pink strawberry that tastes more like water than fruit in the dead of winter can tell you that the small, juicy, bright red fruits found at local farms are exponentially better.
Like asparagus, the strawberry season isn't long, so it's best to go out and enjoy them while they're there.
